The Driver Release Secret for Insane Distance

I bet you think I was pretty crazy if I told you that the best way to get maximum speed into your club head would be to pull your hands in towards your body. But that’s actually what you need to do! Today, I’m going to share some eye-opening drills that will give you crazy amounts of speed, and the best part? That speed is going to feel pretty effortless.

The Power Release Explained

Let’s start with the basics. Grab your driver—it’s the best club to work with for this. Take your normal lead hand and hold onto the club, then place your trail hand just below the grip on the shaft. Face your fairway and get ready to put the club in a specific position.

Setting up the club for the drill

Now, imagine that the club head is kind of loose on the shaft, like the glue is coming undone. Your goal is to fling that club head as far down the fairway as you can. If you’re a fisherman, this might resonate with you—it’s similar to casting a line. You want to think about how to get that club head off the end of the shaft.

As you do this, notice how you’re pulling the grip down and back towards your body while simultaneously accelerating your trail hand. The left hand is coming down into you while the right hand applies force outward. This opposing movement is crucial for generating speed.

Feeling The Power Release

Now, let’s look at your grip position during your swing. When you set up, the grip is relatively close to you. But as you transition into your delivery position, the grip moves slightly away. To get from delivery back to impact, you need to pull that grip back in towards your body. This movement allows your forearms to rotate correctly, which is key to accelerating the club head.

Demonstrating grip movement during the swing

Here’s a quick exercise: perform a split grip drill. Start with your hands split on the grip and move from setup to delivery. Notice your left hand moving away; now pull it back up and in towards you while feeling your right hand accelerate the club head. This will naturally cause your lead arm to bend, which we want to avoid.

To keep your left arm straight, incorporate a little body pivot. As your left hand moves in, the right hand goes down, and your body clears out of the way. This creates a beautiful impact position that feels effortless.

Speed Boost

Let’s build on that. Hold the club with just your fingers; if you let it go, it won’t reach horizontal on the other side. But if you pull the grip upwards as it drops, suddenly it has more speed. The key is not to pull straight up but rather to pull the grip up and in. This combination is what gets your club accelerating towards the ball.

These little exercises are designed to open your mind to what a good delivery looks like with lots of speed. Now, let’s set up a drill to perfect your delivery position.

Driver Swing Delivery

Grab an alignment stick; this is crucial. Set it up behind your golf ball, roughly the length of your drive or a bit more. When you set up to the ball, ensure the alignment stick is in line with your grip. If, during your downswing, the club head gets outside your hands and over the stick, you’re going to struggle to implement the proper movements.

Setting up the alignment stick for the drill

From here, the club must stay behind your hands. This allows you to snap the butt end of the club into your body as you pivot out of the way. It might feel different at first, but it’s an essential drill for achieving maximum speed.

Try to manipulate your backswing to miss the alignment stick, and ensure the club head is behind it while your hands are slightly further away than at setup. This position allows you to spin the club out effectively. The freedom through the ball will feel incredible!

Demonstrating the final swing with proper alignment

Remember, learning how to set up your hands and deliver them differently opens up the opportunity to create some crazy amounts of speed through the golf ball. Practice this drill, and you’ll be on your way to hitting solid, straight shots with effortless power!
